Bedfords was formed in 1927 by Nelson Bedford operating mainly within the clothing / textile industry and delivering to Leeds, Huddersfield and Brighouse.
In the early years Nelson wanted to work alone and persuaded his son Ronald to make his own way in life. Ronald followed this path until 1952, when he left his position at the Post Office and convinced his father they should join forces. By the end of the 1950s the business had quadrupled in size, but unfortunately Nelson died two years after retirement in 1957.
The business continued to grow under Ronald's leadership and by 1968 had expanded to twenty vehicles. Like his father, Ronald did not want his sons to join the business, as he believed they should seek a different career path.
Whilst David did consider going into the design industry, he joined the business in 1972 whilst his brother Robert started a career in civil engineering. Around this time the company had the opportunity to enter the print industry, distributing printed matter throughout the U.K. allowing the company to expand to forty vehicles.
In 1991 Robert Bedford joined forces with his brother, and Bedfords became a limited company. The two of them continued the growth of the company, until their untimely deaths in 2007/2008. Since this time, a Trust has been established and new Directors appointed from the existing management team.
Together the Trust, Directors and Managers have continued to achieve significant year on year growth, with emphasis on cost control, customer service and continued diversification.
Today Bedfords operates a sizeable base fleet and can deliver anything from a small pallet to a 44 tonne full load, including International traffic. Bedfords is a well respected and professional company that is held in high esteem within the logistics industry.
